# Update Your Canvas Integration

> Configuration changes and operational notices to apply to an existing Canvas LTI integration

<Note>
  This guide is intended for LMS administrators. If you encounter any issues during the integration process, please contact [support@nectir.io](mailto:support@nectir.io).

## Update Your Canvas Integration

Nectir AI ships new LMS features regularly. Some work the moment we deploy them, but a few require a one-time change to your Canvas LTI app before instructors and students can use them.

This page is the running log of customer-side changes and operational notices for your Canvas integration. Each entry explains what changed, who it applies to, and exactly what to do.

<Note>
  Setting up Canvas for the first time? You don't need this page. The [LTI Guided Setup](/lms-integrations/canvas-lti-guided) always reflects the current, complete configuration, so a fresh install already includes everything below.
</Note>

### How These Updates Work

* **Setup guides describe the current state.** Following the guided setup today installs every placement and scope Nectir AI currently supports.
* **This page logs changes over time, newest first.** If you installed before an entry's date, that's where you'll find what to do. You never need to reinstall or re-paste your entire configuration.
* **Entries come in two kinds.** *Feature updates* enable new capabilities and are worth applying if you installed before that date. *Operational notices* (such as security procedures) are optional and situational: act only if the entry says it applies to you.

## Available Updates

<Update label="2026-06-02">
  ### Deep Linking Placements

  * **Applies to:** Workspaces that installed Nectir AI in Canvas before June 2026. Newer installs already include these placements.
  * **What it enables:** Instructors can embed a specific Nectir Assistant directly inside Canvas content (modules, the Rich Content Editor, and assignments) instead of only launching Nectir AI from the course navigation.

  Because of a current Canvas bug, these placements must be added from your Nectir AI **Developer Key**, not the App's **Configuration** screen.

  1. In Canvas, go to **Admin** > **Developer Keys**
  2. Find your **Nectir AI** Developer Key and select the edit (pencil) icon
  3. Scroll to the **Placements** field, then use the dropdown to add each of the following, one at a time:
     * **Assignment Selection** (for assignments)
     * **Editor Button** (for the Rich Content Editor)
     * **Link Selection** (for modules and pages)
  4. Select **Save**

  #### Verify the Update

  1. Open a Canvas course where you have a **Teacher** enrollment
  2. Confirm Nectir AI now appears in each new surface:
     * **Modules:** add a module item, choose **External Tool**, and look for **Nectir AI**
     * **Rich Content Editor:** open the editor and look for **Nectir AI** in the toolbar
     * **Assignments:** create an assignment, set submission type to **External Tool**, and look for **Nectir AI**

  If a placement doesn't appear after saving, wait a few minutes for Canvas to refresh the app configuration, then reload the page. Still stuck? Contact [support@nectir.io](mailto:support@nectir.io).

  ### Optional Client ID Rotation (Instructure Security Incident)

  Following the [May 2026 Instructure security incident](https://www.instructure.com/incident_update), some institutions asked whether to rotate their Canvas LTI Client ID. There's no indication that LTI 1.3 applications like Nectir AI were affected, and rotation is **not required**. If your institution's security policy calls for it, follow the safe, reversible procedure in [Rotate Your Canvas LTI Client ID](/lms-integrations/canvas-lti-rotate-credentials).
